WICKS, Frederick Charles (son of Amelia)

No.94504, Driver, Frederick Charles WICKS
Aged 26

15th Div. Ammo. Col., Royal Field Artillery
Died of his Wounds on Friday, 30th March 1917

Frederick Charles Wicks was born in 1891(Thetford Q2-1891 4B:389) son of Amelia WICKS. (mother recorded as Amelia by CWGC and also "Soldiers Personal Effects" Register)

Frederick has not been identified in any census. The only Amelia WICKS ( born Methwold) who could be relevant was at her parents ( Robert and May WICKS) house in London Road, Brandon in 1891, [33] single, with son Bertie [6]. In 1901 she was in Methwold, still single [40], with daughter Edith Maud [5] and a boarder Percy James AMYS [3]. In 1911 aged 51, she was back in London Road, Brandon with son Bertie Augustus [26] and Percy James AMYS [13]. She is however entered on the CWGC cards as Mrs Amelia WICKS. It is more than likely that he is the Charles WICKS, a farm worker at West Farm, Ickburgh in 1911 with his uncle Elijah WICKS [75] a farmer, born Ickburgh; aunt Esther [72] born Littleport and their grandson Walter Russell WICKS [7] born Ickburgh.

He enlisted in Brandon.
Without his Army service record and being in the Artillery it is impossible to say when or where he was wounded. Etaples was base for many General Hospitals on the Channel coast of France, Frederick Charles Wicks dying at No.11 General Hospital.

Once again, from "Brandon at War" (see link above) we learn that :-
Frederick's mother, Amelia Wicks, of 54 London Road, received letters from his comrades stating that on 20th March he had received gunshot wounds and was recovering. A few days later she received an official War Office telegram informing her he had died from those wounds. The Thetford and Brandon Times stated he worked for his uncle in Ickburgh and he was just 18 days away from his 23rd birthday. Although the Commonwealth War Graves Commission stated he was 26 years old when he died.
